For the collection published below, Hudson Brown was named a Young Arts winner with distinction by the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts in 2024.
As an artist, I am compelled to explore the deeply
personal experience of losing a loved one. My photography
portfolio is an introspective reflection of my life, beginning
with my birth and the simultaneous loss of my mother.
Through the lens of a camera, I have gathered memories from
my childhood and my experiences growing up, but it is the
absence of my mother that has been a constant presence in my
life.
In an effort to bring my mother back into my life, I have
compiled photographs of people and events that she never had
the opportunity to witness. Using the power of digital
manipulation, I have incorporated her image into these
photographs, creating a unique visual narrative that captures
the spirit of her life and the legacy she left behind.
My hope is that through these images, my mother can
live vicariously through my relatives, and that her memory
can continue to be honored and cherished. The passing of a
loved one can be a painful and difficult experience, but the
power of memory offers a comforting reminder that they can
continue to exist in our lives. As long as we remember them,
their presence endures, they continue to influence and inspire
our lives and guide us through the tough times. My work
serves as a tribute to my mother's life and the unwavering
love that she shared with those around her; a reminder that
her memory will always live on.
